John Dennis

Unlike many pilots, the thought of flying as a young boy never crossed John Dennis’s mind. His obsession throughout his school days was to become an electronic engineer. So he pursued his obsession with vigor, obtaining his degree in Electronic Engineering by the age of 20.

Fate would have it that he was then transferred to another city where, on a Saturday afternoon, and just on a whim, he decided to go to a flying school to “see what this flying thing is all about."

The rest is history, so they say.

John started his airline career flying the Boeing 707, an aircraft that to this day he dearly loves. From there, he progressed to the B747-200/300 aircraft as a First Officer, while at the same time obtaining a Diploma in Education.

Having flown the B747-200/300/SP/Combi and having attained his command, John then had the opportunity to take command of the B747-400. He had command of that aircraft for 20 years, many of which were as a Senior Check Captain. During that time, he developed a procedure to fly full circling approaches totally in Lnav/Vnav. Little did he know that one of the Captains he taught this to had a major incident only a few weeks later, and having lost all ILS capability, actually needed to use the procedure John Dennis had taught him.

There were many highlights of that period, such as operating numerous flights over Antarctica, including the first ever flight over that continent to record a total eclipse of the sun. Another “first” was the first flight ever over China, establishing the CPDLC communications with that country.

Almost 3 years ago, John had the opportunity to transfer to Command on the A380, which he duly accepted. He says it was the hardest course he ever has taken! However, he’s glad he did and seriously enjoys flying the A380.
